2026 Women's AFCON: South Africa's Campaign Opens with Shock Defeat to Tanzania

Despite entering the match as the clear favorites and top seeds in Group B, South Africa suffered a setback against a Tanzanian team that was determined to make history and earn its first-ever victory in the final tournament stage.

A Determined Performance Falls Short

The South Africans put up a fierce fight and dominated large stretches of the game. However, they were unable to translate their control into a winning result. Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie acknowledged the team's effort and resilience, posting on social media platform X:

"Our comeback will be much stronger, let's get past this loss and plan for our next victory. You dominated the game today, but luck was not on our side".

The match was particularly significant for midfielder Linda Motlhalo, who earned her 100th cap for the senior national team, becoming the 13th South African woman to reach this milestone.

A Rivalry with a Familiar History

This clash marked the third WAFCON meeting between South Africa and Tanzania. The historical record had favored South Africa with a win and a draw, while Tanzania had previously secured its only tournament point in a 1-1 draw with Banyana Banyana in the 2024 edition.

However, the Twiga Stars arrived in Morocco with renewed confidence. They had knocked out former champions Equatorial Guinea in qualifying and were seeking their first win at a WAFCON finals after five losses and one draw in their previous six matches. They achieved that historic milestone against the reigning champions.

Path to Redemption

The result leaves Banyana Banyana with work to do to advance from Group B. The top two teams from each group will progress to the quarter-finals.

Desiree Ellis's side will now turn their attention to two crucial group matches to revive their campaign:

  • Ivory Coast (31 July)
  • Burkina Faso (4 August)

These matches will be decisive in determining whether the defending champions can advance to the knockout stages and keep their dreams of a successful title defense alive.

The Stakes: A Path to the World Cup

The 2026 WAFCON, hosted in Morocco from July 26 to August 16, carries immense significance beyond the continental title. The tournament serves as the qualification route for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil. The four teams that reach the semi-finals will secure automatic qualification for the global showpiece, adding an extra layer of pressure and motivation for all competing nations.

With two group games remaining, Banyana Banyana have the opportunity to demonstrate their resilience and class. As Minister McKenzie's message suggests, the nation remains behind them, and their "comeback will be much stronger" as they prepare for the challenges ahead in Group B.
